After the Flood: The Church, Slavery, and Reconciliation
16 Mar 2023
EDI screening on Wednesday 19th April
Professor Dawn Edge and EDI Director Banji Adewumi would like to invite colleagues, students and the wider community to attend a special screening of a documentary ‘After the Flood,’ which explores the role of the 18th century church in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the lasting impact of colonialism on modern society.
The screening will take place on Wednesday 19th April 4.15pm - 7pm, at St Peter’s House Chaplaincy, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9GH
The University is pleased to have secured the film rights and, in collaboration with the Institute for Teaching & Learning, we plan to make it available as a valuable teaching and learning resource.
Professor Dawn Edge explained the significance of the subject matter and the importance of these conversations taking place, “As a Black woman and Christian, I must confess to finding it difficult to reconcile how my faith and the Bible were weaponised by those who enslaved my African forebears in Jamaica. This film offers the opportunity to openly and honestly examine the enduring legacy of colonisation in contemporary society. Such conversations are long overdue. They are the start of a journey to social justice through truth, reconciliation, and reparation.”
This event is bought to you in collaboration with the Directorates of EDI and Social Responsibility, the Movement for Justice and Reconciliation (MJR) and hosted by the University Chaplaincy.
