Eye

In these challenging times, we understand that many members of our broad University community will be affected by the current cost-of-living crisis. Over the past few months, we have been sharing with you a range of information and resources on financial wellbeing.

Free eye tests for DSE users

If you are a display screen equipment (DSE) user and require an eyesight test, you can visit a registered optician of your choice and claim back the cost of the test. You can also claim back the cost of spectacles that are required specifically for DSE use (subject to a maximum amount; currently £85).

More information can be found at Occupational Health

Free eye examinations

You can also book for a free eye examination (eye test) at The Optometry Clinic located in the Carys Banister building just off Dover street. The offer is open to all colleagues and the general public. The clinic also dispenses spectacles at a discounted rate for colleagues and safety spectacles at set prices. The appointment takes two hours.

Our final year Optometry students perform the eye examination and spectacle dispensing under supervision by fully qualified staff.

Free contact lens fittings and check-ups

Available to everyone aged 16 and over, The Optometry Clinic stock a wide range of contact lenses from all the main contact lens manufacturers including daily disposable, monthly disposable, coloured, toric, rigid and bifocal contact lenses. You are required to have an up-to-date prescription for your eye examination.

All contact lens wearers and those wishing to try contact lenses for the first time are welcome.

Children’s examinations

Do you have a child under the age of 16? Have they had their eyes examined recently?

The Optometry Clinic has a specialist paediatric clinic to give our students experience in examining children. Fully qualified optometrists with a specialist interest in examining children staff our clinic. We have after school and half term appointments available.

The NHS pays for sight tests for children under 16 years of age, and those aged 16 to 18 in full-time education. If your child needs glasses, the NHS will give you a voucher, which may cover the full cost of glasses, or you can put it towards the cost if you want something more expensive.
