Applications now open: Flexible Learning pilots
23 Jan 2023
Following on from the announcement in December, colleagues can now apply for funding to co-create the future of education at Manchester
Flexible Learning is looking for your ideas to help us innovate the way we teach and learn through increased flexibility – whether it’s an engaging new tool, an innovative approach to course design, or a way to make learning more accessible and inclusive. This opportunity is open to all academic and PS colleagues across the University.
We are providing additional resources and support, so that together with our colleagues we can build a culture where new ideas and a trial-and-error mindset are encouraged.
How do I apply?
Initially you’ll only complete a light-touch outline proposal with your idea. You can apply at any time throughout the year and our panel will meet monthly to evaluate which proposals we’d like to take forward or give feedback for reworking pilot ideas that are initially unsuccessful.
If your proposal is selected, we will support you in developing a more detailed project plan and costing, before moving to final approval.
Which projects are suitable for a Flexible Learning pilot?
We welcome any proposal that explores increased flexibility across our four key priority areas – pace, place, pathway and practice.
We have also identified key themes for which pilots will be particularly welcome:
- Technology / Digital tools
Exploring how we can make the best use of digital tools and technologies for increased flexibility and access to learning.
- Digital skills
Enhancing the digital capabilities of students and staff.
- Physical estate
Reimagining (teaching) spaces for flexible learning.
- People and policy
Exploring how we can work in a more agile and collaborative way across the University, as well as engage with internal and external stakeholders to realise the potential of flexible learning.
- Lifelong Learning
Identifying new approaches to learning design to examine the potential for alternative models of provision.
- Assessment
Exploring opportunities for increased flexibility for formative and summative assessment in our Flexible pathways.
- Inclusivity and Accessibility
Identifying good practice to ensure all teaching and learning is inclusive and accessible.
We particularly welcome student-led or student partnership pilots, as well as projects that have a civic or social impact approach and engage with local and regional stakeholders.
How will the learnings from the pilots be shared?
All Flexible Learning pilots will be required to provide ongoing reporting and a final evaluation. These findings and experiences will be showcased across the University, alongside additional resources, such as toolkits, guides, videos, podcasts, presentations and recommendations that may be developed from the pilots.
