Take a stroll around the cosmos at Jodrell Bank

05 Dec 2022

This winter we are opening our doors and filling our spaces with festive cheer as we launch our inaugural winter programme

Lovell telescope in winter

Unravel the wonders of the universe as Jodrell Bank brings you incredible celestial discoveries with the spectacular exhibition, An Imperfect Account of a Comet, celebrating the work of 18th Century astronomer, Caroline Herschel, and astounding images of our first steps on the Moon with a selection of images from the internationally recognised Apollo Remastered exhibition.

We’re also very excited to announce that we will be partnering with the Royal Institution on Thursday 15 December, to bring you a sneak peak of the second of the Christmas lectures before they are aired on BBC Four in between Christmas and New Year. Professor Dame Sue Black is this year’s guest lecturer and will be inviting young people aged 11-17 to explore the secrets of forensic science.

Professor Chris Lintott (BBC Sky at Night, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford) will be joining us for our second Lovell Lecture in this series on Thursday 8 December. If you’re keen to learn about mysterious radio signals and spectacular supernovae and how the Universe keeps finding ways to astonish us, then this is the one for you.

We wrap up the month with Solstice at Jodrell Bank, on Wednesday 21 December, celebrating the shortest day. This family-friendly event will see beautifully animated astronomical illuminations on the façade of our spectacular new First Light Pavilion. Come and take a seat and relax in our awesome, immersive, Space Dome to marvel at the stars in our universe whilst enjoying the ‘We Are Stars’ film. Learn about the moon and the stars and even make one of your own to take away with you.

We think you’ll agree that there’s something for everyone from films to exhibitions, lectures, and learning. There’s even a gift shop for some last-minute Christmas shopping.
