Updating the way our devices connect to the internet
02 Dec 2022
Work to take place on Monday, 5 December and Tuesday, 6 December 2022, with a minimal risk of disruption
Our University is updating the way we manage domain names to identify and connect to devices on the network.
Phase one
We have already updated the connectivity for 243 of our less frequently used domains, without any disruption or negative impact.
Phase two
This will involve updating the more frequently used domains such, as those ending with man.ac.uk, manchester.ac.uk, mcc.ac.uk, and mbs.ac.uk. These outstanding changes are scheduled for Monday, 5 December and Tuesday, 6 December 2022.
Service impact
If, as with phase one, everything progresses as expected, there will be no disruption and colleagues and students will not need to do anything.
If an unexpected issue were to arise, there would be a minor risk that some colleagues and students would not be able to access some University web pages while the changes are taking place.
In the event of an unforeseen issue, we will reconnect services as quickly as possible. However, should the resolution need external support then services would be reconnected at approximately 3.00pm. In this unlikely scenario any further changes would be put on hold to retain services.
Benefits
This change will improve the way we manage the network infrastructure to make it more flexible and resilient.
