An Audience with Sir Bernard Lovell

23 Jul 2007

Rare public appearance by Founder of Jodrell Bank Observatory on 4 August

Sir Bernard Lovell is to make a rare public appearance at an event at Jodrell Bank's 'Hot Spot' Summer Pavilion at 7.30pm on the evening of Saturday 4 August 2007.

Sir Bernard, 93, will participate in 'An Audience with Sir Bernard Lovell' in which he will look back over his astounding scientific career and the development and operation of the giant radio telescope that bears his name.

The Lovell Telescope, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year, is a Grade 1 listed landmark and was recently voted the UK's 'Greatest Unsung Landmark' in a BBC online poll. The Jodrell Bank Observatory has been at the forefront of astronomy research for over 60 years.

Sir Bernard will speak about the early days of the Observatory and the reasons for its creation. He will describe the first observations made in the late 1950s and early 1960s and the national and international role of Jodrell Bank since that time.

He will reflect on the development of a whole new field of science and the way in which science itself can operate and contribute to the expansion of human knowledge.
