World Menopause Day 2022 and our journey to accreditation

20 Oct 2022

To mark and celebrate World Menopause Day 2022 on the 18th October a number of events were organised across campus and at The Whitworth

The Sick Festival’s Menopause Bus Choir was outside University Place where a crowd of male and female staff and students gathered to watch the menopause choir sing original songs on feelings and experiences around menopause.

Following this event Helen Brewis, Head of Staff Wellbeing and Brooke Foulger, People and OD Policy Manager gave a talk to staff on why it is so important to talk about the menopause in the workplace and the University’s journey to achieve the menopause friendly accreditation. This will involve improving the University’s policies and practices, engagement, culture, training, facilities and evaluation so that the lived experience of anyone going through menopause is supported.

Adèle MacKinlay, Director of People & OD, said, ‘I’m really proud to work for an organisation that is creating a culture in which the – sometimes deeply challenging – impacts of the menopause can be openly shared and discussed.  We are working towards a culture in which colleagues going through the menopause feel supported and listened to in the workplace.  This is not a taboo subject at Manchester.  It’s part of employees’ lived experiences and it is part of our responsibility to ensure that this is a place in which we all feel we can thrive in our roles, irrespective of what else in happening in our lives’.

We want all our colleagues to know that this topic will be discussed throughout the year, not just on World Menopause Day! There will be more menopause related events happening over the next couple of months including

All are welcome and we really encourage our colleagues to sign up to attend.
