Travel alert: Ebola outbreak in Uganda

What you need to know if you are in Uganda, or are planning to visit soon

On 20 September 2022 Uganda declared a new outbreak of Ebola. As of 12 October 2022, there are confirmed cases in Mubende and Kassanda Districts in central Uganda and Bunyangabu, Kyegegwa, and Kagadi Districts in western Uganda, and a confirmed death in Makindye Division, Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The virus may spread beyond Uganda’s borders and also impact neighbouring countries. 

On 17 October 2022, Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) have issued travel advice against all but essential travel to Mubenda District, Central Uganda.   Movement restrictions have been introduced in Mubende and Kassanda.  Some entry health control checks are already in place and further restrictions including lockdowns and restricted travel may be introduced if the situation worsens.

What you should do

  • If you have staff or students who are already in Uganda, you should review the arrangements and the risk assessments immediately to determine if any changes in the arrangements including an early return and/or transfer to a lower-risk area are necessary. The University Occupational Health Service can offer you advice and support with this.
  • If you are visiting Uganda at the moment, you should discuss your current position with your School and consider whether it is possible to arrange early depature.
  • If you are planning to visit Uganda in the next two months, you should consider delaying your trip or moving it to another destination where possible.  
  • If your trip has been authorised already, then you must re-assess your trip and seek fresh pre-travel approval from your Head of School. You should also monitor this outbreak on FCDO and seek travel health advice from the University Occupational Health Service to support your risk assessment process.
