Change in right to work (RtW) checks for British and Irish citizens
13 Oct 2022
A reminder that adjustments to right to work checks, introduced on 30 March 2020 by the Home Office, ended on 30 September 2022
This means that, from 1 October 2022, right to work checks for British and Irish citizens must be in person (manual) checks.
In summary RtW checks should be conducted as follows:
Status in the UK | RtW Check Required |
Holders of a British or Irish passport* | In person RtW check |
Holders of an old style sticker/stamp visa in their passport | |
Holders of a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), eVisa, Frontier Worker Permit (FWP) or Biometric Residence Card (BRC) | Home Office online RtW check with a Share code |
*We are currently exploring options to engage the services of an IDVT (Identification Document Validation Technology) provider, which would allow us to undertake right to work checks for those British and Irish colleagues who will be based away from Manchester for the duration of their contract e.g. External Examiners.
As a reminder, all new starters with the University must have a RtW check conducted before they start work, this is a legal requirement. Back dated requests for new appointees cannot be accepted unless the RtW check has been completed by the recruiting manager/department.
