SharePoint 2010 site content to be moved to SharePoint Online
05 Oct 2022
Our University is starting to update the way shared information is stored and accessed within our organisation
This will impact on anyone using SharePoint 2010, which we’ve been using for several years. Our objectives include moving between 200 and 250 of the University’s SharePoint 2010 sites onto SharePoint Online.
New benefits for colleagues accessing and collaborating on documents
SharePoint Online will provide colleagues with:
- More user-friendly front ends to document stores,
- Improved ways of providing and managing access,
- More helpful tagging options for documents and recording metadata,
- Enhanced document collaboration capabilities,
- Improved quality and management of our information in SharePoint.
Who will be affected and what will they need to do?
The migration of information to SharePoint Online is mainly a technical task, especially for less complex sites. However, owners and managers of more complex sites will need to invest some time in deleting out of date information and adding tags for documents and recording metadata. For example, adding information about document owners, ‘delete by’ dates, and sensitivity labels.
We’re now emailing all known SharePoint 2010 site owners and managers to complete a questionnaire to confirm our contact information is correct and provide some details about the content and use of the sites.
The schedule to move SharePoint 2010 sites to SharePoint Online
The migration of sites will take place between January and June 2023. We’ll schedule activities to avoid times which impact on ongoing work associated with individual SharePoint sites. We’ll also provide all the advice and support possible.
