Arrangements for the bank holiday on Monday, 19 September
13 Sep 2022
Message from Patrick Hackett
To mark the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, Monday, 19 September has been declared a bank holiday in the UK.
This means that most areas of our University will be closed and most colleagues are not required to work.
However, this holiday coincides with the beginning of Welcome Week and so there are many valued colleagues who will need to work on this day and others who carry out important duties which keep our campus and international hubs operational all year round.
Welcome events scheduled for the bank holiday will be cancelled or rescheduled. PhD vivas should be rescheduled if possible.
If you are one of those who are required to work on Monday, please accept my sincere thanks on behalf of our University and our students. If you don’t normally work on bank holidays and are required to work on this day you can take equivalent time off in lieu at a later date, owing to the exceptional circumstances. If you are grade five or below you may be offered the alternative option of being paid for the hours you work on Monday at double the normal rate of pay. Please speak to your line manager to discuss arrangements.
For part-time staff, the annual leave calculator has been updated to include this additional Bank Holiday, and you can use this to work out your updated pro rata leave allowance.
We appreciate that childcare may be difficult on this day, so please speak to your line manager if you have concerns. If you have booked annual leave for this day then you should cancel it and take it at a later date.
The arrangements for colleagues who are not required to work is the same as for other bank holidays. That means it is not possible to work on that day and take an alternative day off at a later date.
If you are working, then you can stop to watch the formal part of the State Funeral which is being broadcast from 11am and includes a 2 minute National Silence. This will also be shown on the screen at the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons and in the Students’ Union and halls bars. Alcohol will not be served until after the funeral.
