Flying the flag: Unified in Pride
02 Sep 2022
Manchester Pride took place over the Bank Holiday Weekend and we teamed up with five other institutions to show our inclusivity for LGBT+ staff and students
Marching under the banner ‘Unified in Pride’, we joined forces with Manchester Metropolitan University, The Royal Northern College of Music, The University of Bolton, The University of Law and The University of Salford.
Each institution had 25 people marching and any additional people were absorbed into our cheering point at Sackville Street. Here, we were joined by colleagues from People and Organisational Development on our ‘inclusive recruitment stall’ where we were able to promote current job opportunities and talk to members of the crowd about our LGBT+ recruitment practices and fully LGBT+ inclusive policies.
It’s a good opportunity to remind colleagues about our policies and guidance - we've worked hard to ensure they are fully inclusive to all equality groups – for example, using gender neutral language and did you know that our adoption policy has always been inclusive to same sex couples?
Our University engaged in many other ways for Pride:
- Specially designed screensaver for the month of August
- Encouraged people to update email signatures to include your pronouns
- Displayed posters and banners in offices/reception areas
- Boosted the number of allies to the LGBT+ staff network group
- Increased membership of ALLOUT (the LGBT+ Staff Network Group) – all intersections of the LGBT+ community are welcome
- Had rainbow cake for sale at FoodOnCampus outlets
- Pride merchandise for sale (and still on sale) at the University gift shop
- Posted and received many tweets to @UoMLGBT with #UoMPride
This was all fantastically summarised by Lucy from Directorate of Communications, Marketing and Student Recruitment with these videos on TikTok and Instagram.
If you missed out on Pride, you can still engage with LGBT+ activities - BiVisibility Day will take place on 23 September and there is also plenty of time to complete our annual Stonewall Survey – this takes just five minutes to complete and everyone can complete it, just follow our unique link.
