Urgent: Travelling to Sri Lanka
13 May 2022
Important update for all staff and students
Following a number of violent incidents between pro- and anti- government protesters, Sri Lanka’s PM resigned on 9 May over the country’s deepening economic crisis. An island-wide curfew has been imposed with immediate effect. Further local travel restrictions may be imposed at short notice.
The economic situation is deteriorating in Sri Lanka with shortage of basic necessities including medicines, fuel and food. Further incidents and severe disruption to public services, including transport, are expected.
Due to ongoing security and infrastructure issues, the University has updated the list of high risk countries. If you are planning to visit Sri Lanka in the next four weeks, you should consider re-assessing your travel plans, complete a thorough risk assessment, and seek approval from your Head of School.
