05 Jun 2007

First 'Communication Matters' workshop on 19 June

Welcome to 'Communication Matters' - a new series of training workshops designed to help you improve your communication skills.

Over the coming months, the University's Staff Training and Development Unit (STDU) and Internal Communications Office will be running a number of short and informal workshop sessions covering a wide range of communications topics.

The first session is called 'Improve Your Writing Skills' - and anyone who is responsible for producing any type of written communication as part of their job here at the University can come along.

Perhaps you have to write letters, newsletter articles or brochure copy and would like some tips on how to make sure you're getting your message across clearly and concisely?  If you're regularly writing to colleagues, students, suppliers or customers, then this could be the course for you.

There will be plenty of advice and tips on offer and opportunities for you to practice your skills through written exercises and lively discussion.

Among other things, the course will look at:

  • How to deliver messages and instructions clearly
  • Tone, style and structure of written work
  • Using active and positive words to interest your audience
  • How to avoid using jargon and over-complicated language
  • How to deliver bad news or apologise
  • Understanding the importance of proof reading

The session is being led by Phil Radcliffe who has been a consultant and trainer for the Plain English Campaign and has many years of experience as a journalist and working in public relations.

The session is being held on Tuesday 19 June starting at 12.30pm and finishing at approximately 2pm.  The session will take place in the Knowles Committee Room on the Whitworth Corridor.

Up to 20 people can attend, so if you'd like to book a place please contact:

Please provide your name and job title and a contact telephone number/email address.  Places will be allocated on a first come served basis.
