The Unseen Vulvas: Stories of Vulval Disease

24 Mar 2022

Challenging the stigma

Visible Vulvas (@visiblevulvas) is a group of clinicians, patients, scientists and artists who are working together to increase awareness about vulval health conditions. Vulval and vaginal problems are incredibly common and can range from thrush, lichen sclerosus, genital prolapse and even vulval cancer. Unfortunately, stigma and taboo around vulval and vaginal conditions persist. Women may not seek or receive help and there is very little research into advancing treatment options.

On 29 April there will be the opportunity to attend an event around ‘The Unseen Vulvas: Stories of Vulval Disease’, a project which challenges ignorance, misdiagnosis, body shame and cancer stigma. Women who live with vulval disease share the physical and psychological impact on their lives through photographs. You will also have a chance to meet clinical experts and patient representatives in an informal setting and hear about research updates.

This event is funded by the Wellcome Trust ISSF (Institutional Strategic Support Fund), which enables universities in the UK and Ireland to invest in areas that are of mutual strategic importance to Wellcome and the individual institutions, across medical and clinical sciences, public health, social sciences and medical humanities.

There will also be the chance to make your own art with Visual Artist Philippa Bailey.
