Dr Miriam Firth appointed Flexible Learning academic theme lead for assessment

A message from Professor Danielle George, Associate Vice-President for Blended and Flexible Learning
I am pleased to announce that our Flexible Learning team is growing even further, with Dr Miriam Firth joining us as the academic theme lead for assessment.
Something that has come out strongly in the extensive engagement that we did with staff and students over the past months is that we’ll need to consider how the move to more blended and flexible learning can support relevant, inclusive, and trustworthy assessment.
I believe that in Miriam we’ve found the perfect candidate to enable this. Miriam is a Senior Lecturer in the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), in the School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED). She has taught in UK Higher Education for 14 years, 10 of which have been at the University of Manchester and included her previous role as Director of Teaching and Learning (Strategy) in MIE. Her recent research includes analysis of the environmental impact of large music events and customer service encounter management.
Exploring how we can design authentic assessments that prepare our students for their future careers will be key to making our move to more blended and flexible learning successful. As the former Associate Director of Employability and Professional Development in SEED and co-editor of ‘The Sage Handbook of Graduate Employability’ (due to be released in 2022), Miriam is ideally placed to lead on this.
Miriam has worked across Faculties, Schools and Departments, which has allowed her to learn from colleagues' expertise, as well as getting an insight into a diverse range of academic disciplines. I can’t wait for her to bring her ideas on how we can enable the development of assessment practices into our team and am so pleased she has decided to join us.
