2-factor authentication for students is coming
14 Feb 2022
From Wednesday 9 March 2022, all undergraduate and postgraduate taught students (whether on or off campus) will need to use 2-factor authentication to log in to Blackboard, University email and Microsoft 365.
Our 2-factor authentication service is provided by a company called Duo and is already used by all our staff and postgraduate research students, adding an extra layer of security. We’re now rolling this service out to all taught students who will need to register to get setup before 9 March 2022.
Registering for 2-factor authentication
To get ready to use 2-factor authentication, all students will need to complete registration with Duo via the IT Account Manager and register a device such as a smartphone.
If a student doesn't have a smartphone or needs to discuss accessibility requirements for using 2-factor authentication at the University, they should be directed to contact the IT Support Centre to discuss alternative options, in advance of the change.
A range of support materials for students including a video guide on how to register with Duo and step-by-step instructions is available on the IT Services website – as are a series of frequently asked questions.
All students have today been sent an email from IT Services with the above instructions. A series of follow-up reminders are planned before the registration deadline.
All students will need to register with Duo before Wednesday, 9 March or they will be unable to access Blackboard, University email or Microsoft 365. We recommend students register as soon as possible to get set up ahead of the change.
