Take part in events to celebrate LGBT+ History Month
11 Feb 2022
Sign up to attend upcoming events focusing on Sport and Politics in Art
Our University has celebrated LGBT+ History Month every year since 2010. This year, we are staging a programme of events and activities throughout February that will focus on different aspects of LGBT+ inclusion.
There's still time to sign up for the following events, which are being delivered on line and are free and open to all staff, students and our community.
LGBT+ in Sport - Monday, 14 February, 4.30pm
How many LGBT+ sports people can you name? Probably not many! Being out at the top of your game as a member of the LGBT+ community has always been, and continues to be, a barrier for many top athletes.
During this short session we’ll hear from LGBT+ sports people on their stories, struggles and triumphs. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss inclusivity in sport at our University. Guests include Olympic swimmer Michael Gunning, Olympic race walker Tom Bosworth and sports lawyer Leon Farr.
Politics in Art - Thursday, 17 February, 6pm – 7pm
Join our Alumni Panel Discussion to discuss the theme of this year’s LGBT+ History Month: Politics in Art.
The host for the evening is Hayley-Jane Sims, writer and Your Manchester Stories podcast host.
Also joining the panel are: Rob Cookson, Deputy CEO of the LGBT Foundation; Dominic Bilton, Student and Young Persons Producer at the Whitworth, who helps young people connect art, ideas, and communities together to enact social change using the gallery’s art collection; Dr Monica Pearl, Lecturer in 20th Century American Literature, whose work includes representations of AIDS in American culture and American gay and lesbian writing and visual representation; and Lynn Sutcliffe, Managing Director, Mighty Productions, an Independent Production Company that specialises in Entertainment and Fact Ent TV shows.
You will also have a chance to pose your own questions to the panel on the night.
