Celebrate LGBT+ History Month
27 Jan 2022
Events and activities are taking place throughout February to celebrate our LGBT+ community
Our University has celebrated LGBT+ History Month every year since 2010. This year, the month is adopting the theme of Politics in Art. We are staging a programme of events and activities throughout February that will focus on different aspects of LGBT+ inclusion.
Events will be delivered on line and are free and open to all staff, students and our community.
Pronouns Day - Tuesday, 1 February
We're launching the month by asking as many people as possible to update their pronouns on email signatures, Teams and Zoom. Listing pronouns is an easy way to both normalise the practice and prevent misgendering, and therefore helps remove a barrier for our non-binary and trans communities.
LGBT+ Film Shorts - Wednesday, 9 February, 12 noon and 4.30pm
Enjoy our selection of LGBT+ film shorts and discussion with other attendees.
LGBT+ in sport - Monday, 14 February, 4.30pm
How many LGBT+ sports people can you name? Probably not many! Being out at the top of your game as a member of the LGBT+ community has always been, and continues to be, a barrier for many top athletes. During this short session we’ll hear from some LGBT+ sports people, their stories, their struggles and their triumphs. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss inclusivity in sport at our University. Guests include Olympic swimmer Michael Gunning, Olympic race walker Tom Bosworth and sports lawyer Leon Farr.
Alumni Panel Discussion - Thursday, 17 February, 6pm – 7pm
Hear from Hayley-Jane Sims, writer and Your Manchester Stories podcast host; Rob Cookson, Deputy CEO of the LGBT Foundation; Dominic Bilton, Student and Young Persons Producer at the Whitworth; and Dr Monica Pearl, Lecturer in 20th Century American Literature, discussing the theme of this year’s LGBT+ History Month: Politics in Art. You will also have a chance to pose your own questions to the panel on the night.
ALLOUT Allies training - Wednesday 23 February, 10am
Find out what it means to be an ally in this training session for registered allies.
Rainbow Day - Wednesday, 23 February
The Athletic Union will be encouraging all clubs to wear rainbow laces, dress up, decorate, run social media campaigns, and anything else they can think of. It’s their main day to celebrate the month!
Him - Her - They - Why do we use pronouns? Navigating the landscape - Thursday, 24 February, 12noon
This collaborative event will bring together our University, the GMMH NHS Trust and the LGBT Foundation to explore the use of pronouns to improve inclusion for the LGBT+ community.
Annual Quiz - Thursday, 24 February, 5pm
Pit your wits in teams and test your knowledge across many LGBT+ related subjects and more!
Data Day - Friday 25 February
It's payday for many of us, but it's also data day! When you visit MyView to collect your salary slip, why not check and update your Equality Information?
