Participate in the Manchester Science Festival - October 2007

22 May 2007

Meeting for University staff on 31 May

Are you already involved, or interested in becoming involved as a participant in the inaugural Manchester Science Festival, to be held over the period 20-28 October 2007? The Festival offers an ideal public engagement opportunity for University staff, and we would like to welcome you to come along and hear more about the Festival and how you might be able to contribute in some way.

A meeting will be held in the Ken Kitchen Committee Room at 11am on Thursday 31 May 2007, chaired by Professor David Gordon, Vice-President. The Festival Director Laura Drane will be talking about the plans for the festival and discussing ideas for how colleagues from The University of Manchester can become involved. We are especially interested in the potential for showcasing some of the University's outstanding research in a way that will appeal to and inform the general public in the Greater Manchester area.  The meeting will also help us to pull together a more co-ordinated University contribution, and help to optimise the value to the institution and our participants.

There are six broad programme 'strands':

  • 'Manchesticity'  - the city's unique and influential endeavours and achievements through people, places and ideas
  • Mind and Body
  • Planet - exploring our impact on and use of the Earth, and looking into space
  • 'Extra-Ordinary' - everyday science, technology and engineering: how does that work and why?
  • Past, present and future - looking forward and backward in time at hopes and expectations
  • Lifestyle - the science in our everyday lives; food, music, sport, shopping and more

For further information or if you would like to come along to this meeting (it would be helpful to have an idea of numbers), please contact:
