02 Dec 2021

Dr Habib won in the Promotion of Equality and Social Justice category

Manchester Culture Award

Dr Sadia Habib, Manchester Museum Our Shared Cultural Heritage Coordinator and Researcher at CoDE, won for the Our Shared Cultural Heritage project.

Our Shared Cultural Heritage (OSCH) seeks to test and evaluate new models for engaging young people from the South Asian diaspora and their peers with heritage.

The project is coordinated by Dr Sadia Habib who supports young people in experimenting, creating and leading on activities and events that are relevant and useful to their lives, identities and communities, and that explore the shared histories and cultures of the UK and South Asia. The project engages in cultural celebration, storytelling, social action and other ways and means to explore multicultural belongings critically and creatively in Manchester Museum and heritage spaces beyond the Museum.

Dr Habib said: "I am very delighted to win the Manchester Culture Award, especially as it is testament to how necessary and beneficial it is to diversify the arts, culture and heritage sectors and become inclusive of young people from all social class and ethnic backgrounds.

"This award wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the enthusiasm and talent of the young people in my Manchester Museum OSCH Young Collective who time and time again impress us with their creativity and criticality."
