Giving Tuesday – the international day to give back
30 Nov 2021
In these difficult times, #GivingTuesday is a day where you can do something to support the good causes that mean so much to you
You can volunteer your time, donate money, support various Christmas appeals, share your skills, campaign for a cause, donate food or clothes, organise a community event such as a park clean-up or a coffee morning. The list really is endless!
The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), which runs the annual campaign in the UK, revealed figures from Visa showing that £20.2 million was donated via their payment platforms in the UK on #GivingTuesday 2020. This amounts to £14,000 a minute – and is a 42% rise in donations made through Visa compared to Giving Tuesday in 2019.
Dr Julian Skyrme, Director of Social Responsibility, said: “As an annual antidote to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we’re pleased to support the national Giving Tuesday campaign. This year we’ve curated a range of opportunities for everyone in our University community to support good causes through their time or money. It’s also an opportunity to acknowledge the incredible record-breaking levels of giving our staff made in 2021 through our Payroll Giving Scheme, which allows colleagues to direct money before tax to their chosen causes”
How you can celebrate Giving Tuesday
Support the Rewrite Cancer Appeal
The Re-write Cancer appeal is an amazing opportunity to make a lasting difference to the future of cancer research. Back in 2017 a catastrophic fire took place at the Paterson building, where most of Manchester’s cancer research took place. Now the University along with partners Cancer Research UK and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, are inviting you to support their appeal to create a world-leading new cancer centre
Thank you for your incredible donations
Today isn’t just about thinking about ways you could give – it is also an opportunity to thank you for all your generosity. Your giving via the Payroll Giving Scheme during the past 12 months has been exceptional with over £145,627.55 being donated to great causes via our Payroll Giving Scheme.
