Local WI takes on stellar knitting challenge

Members of the Jodrell Side WI knitted 42 6ft long scarves to match the diameter of the iconic Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory

Earlier this year, the Cheshire Federation of WIs set out a challenge for their local branches. The brief was to knit a series of 6ft scarves to be donated to a charity of their choice. The number of scarves knitted had to relate to a notable landmark, monument, or point of interest.

The Jodrell Side WI in nearby Goostrey chose the mighty Lovell telescope as their monument and set their scarf target to match the diameter of the dish. Being 250ft, this meant the challenge was on to create an impressive 42 6ft scarves.

The needles were clicking all summer long and true to form, the members not only met the challenge but actually surpassed it. By the time they had finished, 48 lovely woolly scarves had been created.

Three of the knitters were invited to Jodrell Bank to show off their work. The scarves have since been sent to local charity Cornerstone Caritas Salford and will be distributed to vulnerable people to help keep warm this winer
