Snowstorm in Manchester in May?

02 May 2007

IOU Theatre performs 'Waylaid' in Platt Fields Park on 11 and 12 May

IOU Theatre: 'Waylaid'
Platt Fields Park, Wilmslow Rd, Manchester, M14 6LA
Friday 11 & Saturday 12 May, 7pm & 10pm

A woman awakes to find herself frozen and tethered in a snow-covered desert. The only evidence of how she came to be here is a wrecked car.

As she gathers her thoughts, the inhabitants of this wilderness emerge and dissolve in the whiteness - alarming and engaging, propelling her forward and hemming her in.

Cocooned within an igloo-like dome and each equipped with their own personal stereo, the audience accompanies the woman on her journey as she attempts to make an escape.

Funny, disturbing and moving, Waylaid transports its audience to a starkly optimistic inner world. A powerful theatre of images, where sound is used inventively and thematically for so much more than talking ... and exaggerates one's sense of dislocation, of drowning inside the whiteness  - has snow really come to Manchester & in May?

"'Waylaid' is visually audacious, as is to be expected from IOU. Recommended to anyone who has tired of predictable theatre." The Stage

"IOU's inimitable style matches Heath Robinson ergonomics to Samuel Beckett's sense of purpose." The Guardian
