Being a Leader: open call for applications

26 Oct 2021

The programme is aimed at researchers, both PGR students and research staff

We are pleased to announce an open call for applications to our new Being a Leader programme which is part of our approach to build diverse, inclusive, authentic leadership capacity within our research community and is jointly funded by our University and Wellcome.

There are 40 places available for researchers across the University (PGR and Research Staff) and we encourage applications from diverse disciplines and backgrounds.

Susie Miles, Associate Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Faculty of Humanities and internal course facilitator, and Nicholas Merton, external course facilitator, describe the course:

“In the Being a Leader course, leadership is defined as “creating a future that wasn’t going to happen anyway”. Creating an inclusive culture with inclusive leaders is one such future.

"Although the course does not use the language of equality, diversity and inclusion, it provides a new and empowering context for participants to engage with inclusion and inclusive leadership in a completely different way.

"There is a fundamental emphasis on participants identifying, inquiring into, and letting go of their strongly-held positions, views, opinions, rationalisations, justifications, judgements, significant history, and anything else that is in the way of them being an effective leader and in the way of creating a future that wasn’t going to happen anyway.

On completion of the course you will be able to listen to people with nothing in the way such that those people experience being heard and respected and be able to speak with people such that those people experience being inspired and empowered.”

  • For further details and to apply for a place, please see our flyer.  The closing date for applications is 30 November and places will be confirmed by 17 December.
