Part-Time Officer elections: Students' Union
08 Oct 2021
Leadership opportunities for students at our Students' Union
The University of Manchester Students' Union is a charity, independent from our University, that exists with one mission: to be the voice of students at Manchester, effecting change and enriching student life together.
The Union is run by students for students, and a crucial part of this is a team of elected student leaders.
On Monday, 11 October, nominations for Part-Time Officer roles will open.
What do Part-Time Officers do?
Part-Time Officers are students that work alongside their studies to represent students in certain areas. They start campaigns, organise events, advocate for student needs and more, all with the aim of making student life better. In the past, Part-Time Officers have:
- Contributed to History Month events, such as LGBT+ and Black History Months
- Worked on a research report to improve the student experience of disabled students, working with our University to implement its recommendations
- Set up a Plant & Hope event, a space for Postgraduate students to meet and build community
- Set the priorities of the Students' Union through submitting policies to our Senate, on topics such as postgraduate mental healthcare and sustainability
What roles are available?
We have 50 roles available:
- 10 Liberation Officers who represent marginalised students such as LGBTQ+ or trans students
- 12 Faculty Officers who liaise with course reps in their faculty to improve students' educational experience
- 6 Community Officers who represent students living in Rusholme, the city centre and Fallowfield, connecting students with the local community
- 7 Access Officers who advocate for 'non-traditional' students such as student parents and carers
- 1 Ethics & Environmental Officer who is our champion for sustainability on campus
- 1 International Students' Officer who works closely with the International Exec Officer to improve international students' experience
- 12 NUS Delegates who represent Manchester Students' Union's members at a national level, attending the National Union of Students' Conference to make change that affects students across the country
A Part-Time Officer role is a great opportunity for students to build their skills, meet and collaborate with their peers, and make tangible change on campus. Whatever a student is interested in, there's a role for them.
What can I do to help?
If you know a student who'd make a great Part-Time Officer - maybe they're passionate about a cause or have shown promising leadership qualities - please encourage them to run! Stefanie Cooper, the SU's Democratic Engagement Coordinator, has written a discussion guide to help you have these conversations. If you'd like a copy, please email stefanie.cooper@manchester.ac.uk.
- Students can nominate themselves on the Students' Union website. Nominations are open until 22 October.
