UCIL celebrates a decade of interdisciplinary learning

Interdisciplinary learning is going from strength to strength, with UCIL at the forefront
The University College for Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL) is now in its tenth year, offering University of Manchester students the opportunity to study beyond the disciplinary boundaries of their degree. UCIL continues to grow in popularity. Student enrolment for 21-22 is more than 25% up on previous years, with 2,300 undergraduate students already signed up to take a UCIL unit.
Recent developments in UCIL are now paving the way for new directions in interdisciplinary learning, both at home and abroad.
Not only has the UCIL unit ‘Creating a Sustainable World: 21st Century Challenges and the Sustainable Development Goals’ won a prestigious Pearson Higher Education award, UCIL is also due to launch their first ever unit for Postgraduate students. This unit, created with the support of the Students’ Union, gives PGT students a chance to meet others from different disciplines, engage with the University’s ethos on sustainability and explore the SDGs in depth.
In addition to the launch of their first postgraduate unit, UCIL has joined forces with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU universities) to offer an online module based around the SDGs. This prestigious collaboration gives students studying a two-year Master’s degree in a low- or middle-income Commonwealth country the chance to explore UCIL’s award-winning SDGs unit.
These and other new ventures will enable the University’s UCIL units to be explored and enjoyed by a much wider audience, both within and beyond the University.
