Award-winning Food Market reopens in University Place

Art, music and dancing to celebrate the return of our fabulous food stalls

The University’s award-winning food market is set to reopen its doors this week.

On Wednesday, 23 September there will be a two-hour DJ set over lunch whilst staff students and visitors are invited to browse ‘There is a Light That Never Goes Out’, a photography exhibition showcasing Manchester’s music history.

The idea for ‘There is a Light’ was developed by photographer Jill Furmanovsky and the RockArchive Collective, after her successful ‘Oasis DNA’ exhibition in 2017. Jill collaborated with writer Jon Savage to develop the exhibition and with help from the Manchester Digital Music Archive they curated this superb collection of photographs which is now owned by The University.

The exhibition is not only a celebration of the musicians we know but also a thrilling showcase of works by many of the UK’s most talented music photographers. In addition to Jill’s own works are iconic images created by Manchester’s own Kevin Cummins and his NME colleague, Pennie Smith. Other contributors include Paul Slattery, Steve Double, Peter Walsh and Howard Barlow.

Alongside the exhibition, food and drink will be available from Independent local food traders and will feature fresh Vietnamese, Thai, American, Malaysian, Ethiopian and Vegan dishes.

Following the DJ set, Ethiopian Dancers will perform traditional dancing until The Market closes.
