Apple users: Urgent security update for iPhone, iPad and Mac

16 Sep 2021

Apple has released a critical software update to fix a major security vulnerability – you may need to take action.

Apple are reporting that new spyware called ‘Pegasus’ could infect iPhones, iPads, Apple watches or Mac computers without requiring you to click on any links. The spyware downloads files to devices without permission. After it is installed on a device, the spyware can steal confidential data, including passwords, and also activate an iPhone's camera or microphone.

The advice from Apple is to apply a security update as soon as possible.

University provided Mac computers are pre-configured to automatically download updates. We recommend checking these settings and that there are no pending updates awaiting a system restart. Information on how to check for background updates is available:

Instructions on how to download the latest software and security updates for all other Apple devices:

It is advised that you regularly update your Apple device with the latest versions of software and security updates to help keep your information and data safe.
