Manchester moves up in latest Times Higher Education world university rankings

The University of Manchester is ranked as a top 50 global institution, according to the Times Higher Education (THE)

THE’s newly-released rankings show our University's strong reputation in the world is getting even better and is a testament to the hard work of students, faculty and staff who contribute to our research and teaching.

Deputy President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Luke Georgiou said: “We are delighted the Times Higher Education now puts The University of Manchester in the top 50 of all universities globally. 

“People across the globe have tackled well-documented challenges for the last 18 months – not least in our community here.

"I’m incredibly proud that despite everything that everyone at The University of Manchester has had to deal with – and continues to – the hard work of our faculty and students has been recognised with the institution being recognised as one of the best in the world.”

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 include more than 1,500 universities across 93 countries and regions, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date. 

The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

In April, Manchester was also named the world's number one university in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. The University topped the table of more than 1,200 universities from around the world on action taken towards the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN's 17 SDGs are the world's call to action on the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing humanity and the natural world. 

This latest global ranking success follows on from Manchester maintaining its highest ever position of 27 in the prestigious QS World University Rankings in June and moving up to 35 in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) in August.
