Course content
This is an overview course providing a basic introduction to a range of MIMAS bibliographic services. There will be a demonstration of the main features of each service, followed by a hands-on session. This offers the opportunity to get to grips with each service in an unhurried situation, with service support staff available to answer questions and provide assistance.
During the day the following services will be covered:
- Archives Hub: FREE access to a searchable database of nearly 20,000 archive collections held in 150 UK universities and colleges. These collections are relevant to many different research interests. They include the records of businesses, individuals and families and range from art and architecture to science and medicine to teaching and technology.
- Copac: Come and try out the NEW Copac interface and database just before it is released. Copac gives FREE access to the merged catalogues of 27 major academic and national libraries in the UK and Ireland, including the British Library, National Library of Scotland, and National Library of Wales/Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Copac gives access to details of a wide range of materials, including electronic documents, in all subject areas.
- ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education. This course provides a basic introduction to the Web of Knowledge (WoK) platform and the Web of Science. The course will focus on the WoK platform and cross searching and Web of Science. This course does not cover the additional Web of Knowledge products. Available to members of subscribing institutions listed at theWeb of Knowledge website.
- Zetoc gives access to the British Library's Electronic Table of Contents (ETOC), a searchable database of over 20 million article titles and conference proceedings from over 20,000 of the most important research journals, as well as around 16,000 conference proceedings published per year. Also includes a table of contents alerting service and RSS feed. FREE to members of most UK further and higher education institutions.
Who is the course for?
The course will be of interest to researchers, academics, librarians and support staff within the Further Education and Higher Education communities. Some experience of using a web browser will be useful for the practical exercises.
CrossFire
MIMAS provides a wide range of CrossFire training, both open-access and "in-house" tailored courses.
- Introduction to CrossFire, 16 May 2007, 10am-1pm
- Advanced CrossFire, 16 May 2007, 2pm-4.30pm
The Introductory course covers the background to the service, the database contents, live demonstrations of CrossFire in action and a lengthy hands-on session for all participants. Training materials and handouts are provided.
The Advanced course, aimed specifically at chemists, covers many of the more complex features of the database such as reaction searching, the use of generic groups, stereochemistry etc.
Although a course username will be available if necessary, it would be helpful if you could make sure you have an Athens personal username and password which ideally you will have already registered for use with CrossFire.
