Staff and students have been offered an early look at some of the innovative and purpose built teaching spaces coming to MECD, via new 360 views of recently completed spaces in the MECD development.
The new spaces include: the 200-seater blended lecture theatre, 10 MEng project spaces dedicated to Electrical and Electronic Engineering students, laboratories on the ground and 4th floors of James Chadwick Building and face-to-face teaching spaces on the 2nd Floor Engineering Building B, which is the building that faces on to Upper Brook St on the eastern side of MECD.
Dr. Gianpaolo Vignali, Academic Lead for MECD said:
“This is a flavour of what’s to come. From the blended lecture theatres to the makerspace and student study spaces, MECD will be home to a forward-thinking working environment for our students and researchers. Learning spaces are changing, and we know student flourish within a variety of learning spaces rather than just in a classroom, which is what MECD will offer.”
The blended theatre allows for a combination lecture-based learning with the opportunity to develop hands on lab skills in the adjoining laboratory. By using a removable partition this space can be opened up into one complete learning centre or divided into the individual lab and lecture theatre. This built in flexibility provides whatever is needed for staff and students to excel. There is also power to every seat and the entire building is serviced with high density WiFi. Whilst these spaces aren’t open just yet, consideration is currently being given to how these completed spaces can be opened to staff and students earlier than originally planned.
The completion of the refurbishment of parts of the James Chadwick building and the 2nd Floor of Engineering Building B follows on from the reopening of Oddfellows Hall, which is temporarily being using by the Library to provide 100 bookable study spaces for PGT students. The Active Travel Hub, adjacent to the Booth St East building is also complete and cycle parking is now available for use.
