International debate on new media and civil society in Russia

Discussion by journalists and academics at Birmingham on 16 March
Prominent figures in Russian Internet and scholars in Russian studies are to gather at The University of Birmingham on 16 March to discuss rising concerns over press freedom in Russia and the Internet as a possible space for constructing civil society.
Professor Stephen Hutchings from the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures has brought together journalists and academics from Russia and the UK in a bid to raise awareness of issues surrounding freedom of speech in the former Soviet state.
The gathering is one of three debates on Russian media culture organised by Professor Hutchings. One has already taken place at the University of Manchester in February and proved to be a success. Another will be held at the Frontline Club in London in April.
New Media and Civil Society will be held at The University of Birmingham on 16 March from 11am to 2pm at the ERI Building, room G51. Panellists are:
- Oleg Kozlovskii, Co-ordinator of the Oborona Youth Movement
- Anton Nosik, President of the Rambler Search Portal in 2001-2004, Creator of MosNews.com English Language Information Agency
- Vlad Strukov, Lecturer in Russian and Media, University of Leeds and London
- Ivan Zassourskii, Head of Laboratory for Media Culture and Communication at Moscow State University
