Biological and Biomedical Sciences showcased in new online resource

The BioDiscovery resources have been developed to celebrate British Science Week (8-13 March)

Aimed at secondary school pupils (years 7-11) and the general public, the online resources have been designed and created by researchers, lecturers, staff and students to showcase the exceptional research and teaching taking place in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences at the University.

Featuring online videos, activities and exhibits, participants are able to take part in virtual tours, see the rare and beautiful Sylvia’s tree frog here in Manchester and learn about the fruit fly’s amazing role in research.

Professor Sheena Cruickshank explains how what you eat affects your immune system as part of a BBC production, and Bubble-PAPR show how a new, innovative form of PPE has been developed by clinicians at the University (in partnership with Wythenshawe Hospital), to protect NHS staff against COVID-19. Insights are provided into neuroimaging techniques, how brain inflammation disorders develop and the secrets of the mummies and ancient DNA.

A virtual tour of the animal unit can be viewed and insights are provided into neuroimaging techniques and how brain inflammation disorders develop. 

Organised by Dr Shazia Chaudhry, Dr Katherine Hinchliffe and Dr Lisa Swanton from the School of Biological Sciences, BioDiscovery aims to encourage enthusiasm, fun and discovery in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences, both in school pupils and the wider public, offering an inspirational exploration of science.
