Upcycled astronomical face masks are out of this world

Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre has partnered with ReWearable Clothing to launch a range of reusable face masks

Set up in January by Beccy Waite, ReWearable Clothing aims to reduce the impacts of fast fashion and prevent clothing and other materials from going to landfill. With the help of her 14 year old twin daughters Charlotte and Jessica, the family source items from charity shops, jumble sales and thrift stores that they can re-work, recycle or re-sell, breathing new life into old products.

As the impact of the pandemic hit, Beccy and the girls spotted the need to create quality reusable face masks, so they set about designing their own pattern and repurposing bedding seconds to create and sell them online.

Beccy explains: "It was at this point that we were approached by the Jodrell Bank team. I was overjoyed when they asked us to create bespoke masks for sale in their gift shop."

The challenge was set to source astronomical themed fabrics that could be used to create 100+ high quality face masks for the Discovery Centre’s gift shop in time for Christmas. The materials were found locally and ethically and everything about the finished product is recycled or repurposed. Even the ear loop elastic is end-of-roll and the packaging is biodegradable.

Amanda Labella, Cultural Enterprise Manager at Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, said: "We’re beyond thrilled with the masks, and so are our customers, in fact they’re already the most popular item in our online shop.

"We knew we had to have reusable face masks in stock and were keen to find a sustainable supplier that could create something really special for us. Beccy has been brilliant and we’re delighted to be working with her."

The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre face masks are fitted, washable, lined and have elasticated ear loops. They are available in three different space-themed designs featuring constellations, galaxies and planets, come in two different sizes, and are for sale exclusively on the Jodrell Bank website for £8.95 each.

All profits made from sales in the Jodrell Bank Gift Shop are reinvested in to the Discovery Centre, helping to protect, share and celebrate this internationally significant site.
