12 Oct 2020

We want everyone to feel safe and respected in our community – take part in a UoM Students' Union event marking Hate Crime Awareness Week, 10 – 17 October

We want everyone to feel safe and respected in our community.

Hate crime, hate incidents and hate speech are terms used to describe acts of violence or hostility aimed at a person or a group because of who they are or who someone thinks they are.

It can happen online or in person.  It can happen in a lecture or at work.   We’re asking everyone to be an active bystander and speak up and stand up to hate.

If you or someone you know has experienced any form of harassment, discrimination or hate you can report it anonymously or report it and get support from an advisor at:

Where do you draw the line?

When it comes to hate crime, where you draw the line might seem like a simple answer. However, what might be considered banter and harmless to one person might be abusive and intimidating to another.

The University of Manchester Students' Union are hosting an online session, Hate Crime: It’s No Joke – From Banter to Danger, at 2pm on Wednesday, 14 October.

Both students and staff are invited to attend and find out more on what they can do to help prevent hate crime.
