Appointment of next Pro-Chancellor

The current Pro-Chancellor, Mrs Gillian Easson, will shortly step down from the role having served the maximum term allowed and the University is seeking a replacement

The Pro-Chancellor has an important ambassadorial and ceremonial role and deputises in the absence of the Chancellor as and when required.  The Pro-Chancellor is a member of the Nominations Committee. Please note that the role is not open to paid members of University staff.  We would estimate that this role (which is not remunerated) requires between 10 to 12 days per annum.

Key aspects of the role are:

• Ability to act as an ambassador for the University, including capacity to promote the University regionally and nationally (and potentially internationally).  
• Understanding of the higher education sector and specifically, the University and its aspirations and values. 
• Ability to chair large, public meetings involving a range of stakeholders in the absence of the Chancellor. 
• Relevant experience and ability to contribute to the work of the Nominations Committee in appointing lay members of both the Board and General Assembly. 
• Ability to work effectively with officers of the University, including the Chair of the Board and the President and Vice-Chancellor. 

Pro-Chancellors are appointed by the General Assembly, for an initial period of four years and are eligible for re-appointment for one further period of four years.  Nominations for consideration by Nominations Committee are welcome from staff, students and alumni, and members of the Board of Governors and General Assembly. Nominations are welcome from all sections of the community, reflecting the University’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

All nominations should be submitted to the Deputy Secretary, deputysecretary@manchester.ac.uk to arrive by 12 noon on Monday, 2 November 2020, using the Nomination Form.

Nominators are asked to confirm that the person proposed is willing to serve in the role if appointed.
