Details of action taken by Estates and responsibilities for staff and students

University of Manchester

The Directorate of Estates and Facilities, and Safety Services have published detailed information on cleaning, and FAQs on how our campus buildings will be ventilated as more staff and students occupy campus.

This is part of a comprehensive set of measures which are being introduced along with guidance for staff and students to ensure we all minimise the risk of COVID-19.

Cleaning

The cleaning risk assessment details the thorough cleaning – using a long-acting preventative anti-virus cleaning product – in areas including lecture theatres, labs and offices. Also covered in the document are frequent touch points such as lifts, door handles, kitchens and toilets, which will all be cleaned thoroughly each morning by Estates staff.

It is important that colleagues and students play their part in cleaning, maintaining social distancing and following instructions for the use of buildings to ensure that they minimise the risk of infection to themselves and others.

In areas such as lecture theatres, as well as the daily clean, wipes will be provided for staff to clean surfaces and equipment they have touched after use.

The comprehensive cleaning information can be found on StaffNet, alongside detailed guidance about how to return to campus for managers and staff.

Ventilation

Estates and Facilities, along with Safety Services have also been ensuring that buildings are adequately ventilated, to ensure that our campus complies with the latest advice from the Health and Safety Executive.

A good supply of fresh air ventilation to indoor spaces is part of the University’s wider campus COVID-secure risk management arrangements to keep everyone safe.

As with cleaning, all of us have a role to play, by considering ways to maintain and increase the supply of fresh air, for example, by opening windows and doors (unless fire doors). You should also consider if you can improve the circulation of outside air and prevent pockets of stagnant air in occupied spaces. You can do this by using ceiling fans or desk fans for example, provided good ventilation is maintained.

Detailed FAQs on ventilation have been published on StaffNet.
