Update on travelling to campus
23 Sep 2020
Information on car parking and charges, and cycle storage
As more staff return to campus, we are making changes to the way our car parking and cycle storage have been operating since 18 March 2020.
Government advice remains that people should walk or cycle to work if possible. As more people return to campus, we are updating our position on car parking, and providing additional information on bike storage.
Cycling
If you have access to a bike, cycling is an efficient and healthy way to get to campus, and along with walking remains the recommended way to get to work if possible.
Anyone wishing to access cycle storage should email carparking@manchester.ac.uk.
There is lots of help and support available:
- Getting a bike: Cycle to Work Scheme, second hand bikes and bike hire.
- Cycling safely: Cycling UK basic bike maintenance guides, Sustrans tips before setting off, British Cycling’s basics of commuting by bike.
- Training: TfGM offer FREE 1-2-1 training courses for anyone to build confidence.
- Cycle parking and supporting facilities: over 3,900 cycle parking spaces on campus, cycle shelters, showers, pumps and maintenance stands.
- Route finding and support: TfGM cycle maps, UMBUG and UMRun support groups for any questions and route recommendations, walking advice.
Car parking
During lockdown, the barriers in some of our car parks have been in the up position meaning that car parking has been available free of charge to our key workers and colleagues working in the NHS.
From 2 September 2020 the barriers at our Charles Street, Dilworth Street and Dover Street carparks barriers moved to the down position. Our Booth Street car park also opened with barriers in the down position.
Changes to car parking charges were announced last week, to reflect the changing patterns of work and access to public transport. You can find out more about these changes on StaffNet.
- Enquiries regarding car parking should be emailed to the Carpark Office at carparking@manchester.ac.uk.
Public transport
Transport for Great Manchester has published extensive guidance for people who need to use public transport. Some companies such as Stagecoach have apps which indicate busy services.
Please follow all the latest guidance, and you may wish to discuss staggered work times with your manager to help avoid busy times on buses, trams and trains.
