Call for Proposals: Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Programme in Engineering for M

Deadline for receipt of proposals is Friday 9 March 2007

Engineering Doctorate (EngD) awards are Doctoral Research Studentships funded by EPSRC through the University's Collaborative Training Account (CTA) for work on technical projects in collaboration with companies and other non-academic organisations. The collaborating organisation also contributes funding. The Manchester EngD Centre in Engineering for Manufacture is now accepting project proposals for the 2007/08 academic year. The deadline for receipt of proposals is Friday 9 March 2007, and these will be assessed by the EngD Panel meeting on 28 March 2007.

The EngD is a flagship programme designed to provide high quality graduates with the opportunity to develop their research, management and professional skills at the same time, with the objective of equipping them to be senior managers in industry at an early stage of their careers. The Manchester programme has a first-rate record in producing individuals who go on to good jobs in industry, with excellent earnings potential. For academics involved in the programme, it represents an excellent opportunity to form new partnerships with companies or to cement existing ones.

The main features of the EngD are: 

  • The students (termed Research Engineers) receive an enhanced tax free stipend compared to a normal PhD;
  • They undertake a four year programme built around a doctorate level, company based research project;
  • Integrated with the research is a programme of taught Management Modules and a comprehensive Professional Development Programme, which provide both the theoretical basis and the practical tools to enable the Research Engineers to understand the commercial context of their project and to develop their professional skills.

    • New proposals should be consistent with the Manufacturing Theme of this EngD Programme. We will consider proposals in any area of engineering or the physical sciences, which supports manufacturing industry (including construction)in some way. However, this year we are particularly encouraging proposals in the following fields: aerospace engineering; composite materials and their applications; biomaterials and their applications; projects which contribute to the development of sustainable manufacturing processes or technologies.

    There will be a short presentation on the EngD Programme, with an opportunity to ask questions, in RENOLD BUILDING, ROOM F6 at 1.10pm on Thursday 18 January, finishing at 1.50pm.
