18 Jun 2020

She will take up the position from 1 July 2020, alongside her role as Director of the Institute of Teaching and Learning

Judy Williams

The University has appointed Professor Judy Williams as Associate Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students, with a particular emphasis on engagement and inclusion.

As a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of AdvanceHE, Judy has a national reputation for teaching leadership and academic development. She has won multiple internal and external awards for her academic and teaching development work during her distinguished career, including Teacher of the Year, a Teaching Excellence Award and a Times Higher Award.

Many colleagues will know Judy through the Leadership in Education Awards Programme where she is leading and supporting over 1,500 colleagues to various levels of AdvanceHE fellowship.

Since 2004 Judy has been the Director of the Centre for Academic and Researcher Development in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, becoming co-Director when she took on the role as inaugural director of the Institute of Teaching and Learning. In this role she has been driving forward staff and student development. Judy was also awarded the North West Hub of Vitae in 2008, providing support and training for early career researchers across the North West and helping shape the agenda nationally.

Working with the Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students, Professor April McMahon, Judy will have a particular focus on Engagement and Inclusion for both students and staff, a topic of significant importance as we adjust to new ways of teaching and learning in the immediate months and also, as we continue to work towards our strategic goals, within the Teaching and Learning theme of Our future.

She will join Professor Danielle George as an Associate Vice-President. Danielle was appointed to her role in April of this year, to focus on online and flexible learning.

Judy said: “I am looking forward to working with students and colleagues to enhance the culture of the University, enabling us to provide high quality, agile and inclusive experiences for our staff and students.  We will create transformative student experiences, building partnership approaches where students and staff co-create fully inclusive ways forward.”

Professor April McMahon added: “This is an excellent appointment for our University and the Teaching, Learning and Students team. Judy is already providing effective and impactful leadership as Institute Director, and her emphasis on Engagement and Inclusion in her new AVP role is welcome and timely.”

Judy will take up her new post from 1 July 2020, in addition to her current role as Director of the University’s Institute of Teaching and Learning.
