Updated staff FAQ: maternity/adoption leave during furlough, special leave

29 Apr 2020

Frequently asked questions are updated regularly

This advice is correct at the time of publication of this news article.

If you have health concerns then you should refer to the NHS website as recommended by Public Health England. For other queries regarding the current situation, email coronavirus-info@manchester.ac.uk.

The following new questions have been added to the coronavirus staff FAQ:

I'm due to go on maternity / adoption leave in the near future, will being furloughed impact this?

No. Being placed on furlough leave will not impact your maternity / adoption / parental leave arrangements or your entitlement to occupational and/or statutory pay. You should continue to follow the notification requirements set out in the relevant University policy to ensure that your leave is administered correctly. If you have any further queries please speak to your line manager and/or your HR Partner.

Will the date that my maternity / adoption leave is due to start be postponed due to being furloughed?

No. Being placed on furlough will not defer your maternity / adoption leave start or end dates - they will continue in line with the arrangements you have already made. If you have not yet made arrangements for your leave, please ensure that you follow the correct notification procedures as set out in the relevant University policy. If you have any further queries please speak to your line manager and/or your HR Partner.

The following questions have been updated:

Can I use paid Coronavirus Special Leave in smaller chunks, such as half days, or do I have to take it all in one go over 14 consecutive days?

We have amended our Special Leave policy, so you can now apply to take up to 14 days paid leave to cover any coronavirus-related emergency (in addition to the existing allowances). You do not need to use this on consecutive days, and you can take it in half days if that is more useful to you. We hope this extra flexibility will help you balance work with other urgent demands during this difficult time. Taking Special Leave for coronavirus-related reasons will not affect your ability to apply for Special Leave for other reasons throughout the year. However please bear in mind that these policies are subject to ongoing review.
