Home schooling heroes - send us your kids’ science questions

Our experts answer your children's home school science questions
It’s hard to believe that we’ve now been self-isolating and social distancing for more than a month. If you’re a parent, we hope you’ll give yourself a pat on the back. Home schooling is something most of us never signed up for!
If your days are filled with the sound of endless questions – What are clouds made of? How do birds fly? Why did the dinosaurs die? … Where do babies come from? – you’re no doubt in a state of collapse by the time evening rolls round. And if your kids are older, the questions may go completely over your head.
We want to help! Our new campaign, launched on the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s The Buzz podcast and Twitter, is seeking out kids’ questions about science and engineering to put to our resident experts. We’ll pass the questions on to our academics and ask them to put on their thinking caps and get your children some answers.
Dr Ben Parslew of the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering swooped in with an answer to the first question – how to birds fly – proving that our academics are the heroes both parents and kids need right now.
If you’d like to take part, please send a video (filmed in landscape) of your child asking their question to fsemarketing@manchester.ac.uk. Kids of any age can take part.
And if you’re an academic working in the fields of physical science, biology, health or engineering, we’d love it if you could get involved. Follow FSE’s Twitter account for the latest questions.
