Volunteers needed at local charity for deprived communities

The Bread and Butter Thing needs people to help distribute food and necessities
One of our Volunteering and Community Engagement Team’s new partners, The Bread and Butter Thing needs more volunteers as the charity tries to help deprived people in Manchester during the COVID19 pandemic.
The Bread and Butter Thing works with local community organisations to recruit members with very little disposable income who are offered the provision of a deeply discounted food service to help their income go further.
Our students are already able to volunteer but more hands are needed at this difficult time. Any staff who are able to volunteer, in their own time, would be very welcome.
There are three roles, volunteering from Monday to Saturday:
- Hub Help from 12.30pm – 4pm: working at the hubs where the charity sells the food and managing the queue by going up and down to remind people to keep 2m apart and talk to them while maintaining safe distance;
- Packing bags from 8am – 1pm: packing the food into bags a the warehouse and loading the bags on to the vans which will then go to the hubs;
- Cleaning from 1pm – 4pm: sweeping/mopping/sanitising surfaces, jet washing vans and keeping the packing area clean for the bag packers at the warehouse.
The charity needs five helpers at each of the busy hubs, up to ten bag packers a day and up to three cleaners a day. On Saturday it needs one hub help and five packers.
Volunteers will have an induction on safety and hygiene and the charity has regular sanitising and cleaning processes in place to minimise risk and ensure the warehouse is a safe area.
