New: Meditation course
Time/Date: Wednesday 30 January for seven weeks, 5.15-6.15pm
Location: The Well-Being Room, Dover Street Building, Dover Street
Cost: Students £24.50, Staff £29.50
Meditation is an effective way to relax and bring inner peace. It can help you to combat stress and improve your concentration and general health. Meditation can provide an antidote to stress and a means of becoming calmer and more relaxed. In meditation we learn to respond creatively to our experience and use awareness to undo restrictive habitual responses.
The effects of meditation are cumulative. In this course you will practise mindfulness of breathing and other practices which enhance awareness and peace of mind.
This course is open to all - you do not need to be interested in Buddhism.

Mood and Food course
Time: Thursday 31 January for six weeks, 12noon-1pm
Location: The Well-Being Room, Dover Street Building, Dover Street
Cost: FREE
This new six-week course is part of the Well-Being programme offered by the Counselling Service and SPORT and is for students and staff of The University of Manchester.
- Can food really affect my mood?
- How does food affect mood?
- What's the psychological relationship?
- What should I look for in my diet?
- Which foods affect which moods?
- Which foods do I need to eat in order to feel well?
- How can I go about changing my diet?
The relationship with food works both ways:
a) How we feel affecting what we choose to eat or drink - mood to food
b) What we eat affecting our mental functioning - food to mood.
It is very helpful to be aware of the psychological aspects behind what we are choosing to eat as well as the effects of food on our mood.
This course is an opportunity to gain information and advice about how food and nutrition can significantly affect your mental and emotional health. It explains which food can cause problems, which foods can help, why and how to change your diet for the better.
This course is led by Ursula Gothard (BSc in Nutritional Medicine).

New: Nutrition and Weight Management course
Time: Thursday 31 January for seven weeks, 1-2 pm
Location: The Well-Being Room, Dover Street Building, Dover Street
Cost: £ 37.50
This seven-week course is led by Ursula Gothard (BSC in Nutritional Medicine) and will look into eating patterns and ask why many diet programmes don't work. You will learn practical ways to manage your weight with optional weekly weight-ins. The course will focus not only on weight loss but will offer useful information on eating behaviours, nutrition and on how to eat a balanced diet.
