Manchester-Malawi Global Xchange - community hosts needed.
15 Jan 2008
Find out about another culture in the comfort of your own home.
Global Xchange is a cross-cultural youth volunteering exchange programme run by VSO and the British Council. The six month programme involves three months spent in the developed country (for this Exchange, Manchester) and three months in the developing country (likewise, Malawi).
This is the first-ever Xchange that has been established as an outcome of the British Council and VSO having confidence in a university's ability to support an Xchange through a higher education institution's volunteering service.
In March (exact dates to be confirmed), the Exchange's 18 volunteers (aged 18-25) from Malawi and the UK will be arriving in Manchester to spend over 6000 hours engaged in voluntary work on local community projects in and around the city. We are appealing for LOCAL PEOPLE TO PROVIDE ACCOMMODATION FOR A PAIR OF VOLUNTEERS.
We ask for local people to accommodate two volunteers (one from Malawi and one from the UK). The pair (two male or two female) are willing to share a room: two beds, one double bed or bunk beds are all fine. Volunteers will not require entertaining, they are expected to be one of the 'family'. They will fit in with your schedule and are willing to clean and cook for themselves. We provide a weekly allowance of £75 to cover food costs.
We would like to hear from you if:
- You would like to learn more about another culture and have an international experience from the comfort of your own home;
- You are available for 11 weeks or part of that time;
- You have a spare room;
- You live within daily commuting distance of Manchester;
- You don't meet the above criteria, but you know someone who does and would be interested in obtaining more information.
Global Xchange provides:
- A weekly allowance of £75 per pair of volunteers to cover food costs.
- Volunteers who have gone through a selection process and training.
- A briefing for you before the volunteers arrive.
- Two programme supervisors on hand for support whenever necessary.
