Chancellor creates a buzz at young people awards

04 Mar 2020

Our Chancellor Lemn Sissay attended the Manchester Young Buzz Awards last week, organised by Manchester City Council

Lemn Sissay Youth Buzz Awards

The Youth Buzz Awards are organised by Manchester City Council to recognise the achievements of Manchester's children and young people, and celebrate the positive work and contributions they make to the city.  The Awards are open to any young person aged 11-19 and up to 25 years old for those with special educational needs, disability and/or care leavers. The young people nominated must live, work or go to school in Manchester.

There are ten categories and our University sponsored the Young Leader award – recognising a young person who demonstrates exceptional leadership and who through their passion, commitment and motivation inspired other young people and those around them. The Youth Leader Award for was won by Zimal Arshad for her leadership work in the local community.

The Manchester Youth Council was involved in the organisation of the Awards and at the end of the evening, Lemn recognised the work of the Youth Council and the work they have done on Skills for Life, a universal approach that promotes the use of a common language to describe five key skills and a commitment to increase opportunities for children and young people to practice, reflect and record these skills. The five skills are Communication, Problem Solving, Self-belief, Self-management and Teamwork.

Speaking after the presentation, Lemn said: "It was an honour to be invited to speak at the Manchester Youth Buzz Awards and to present the Young Leader Award.

"All the finalists are an absolute inspiration and the city should be very proud of its young people and their achievements.

"It was great for the University to be part of this celebration and to see many of the schools and organisations who work with our widening participation and outreach team  recognised for the work they and the young people are doing to make a difference in their local communities."
