Professor Alan Gilbert appointed to UK Employment and Skills Commission.

03 Jan 2008

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Gilbert has been named as one of 20 Commissioners who will be members of the new UK Commission for Employment and Skills. The Commission has been set up to influence the employment and skills systems of the UK, helping them to be more responsive, relevant and high performing in the 21st century. It aims to achieve a world class profile on skills by 2020 and an 80% employment rate, and in so doing to contribute to a fairer society.

The establishment of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills was a key recommendation of the independent report by Lord Leitch 'Prosperity for all in the global economy - world class skills'. It will take on the functions of two existing bodies - the Sector Skills Development Agency and the National Employment Panel - which will close in 2008. The Commission is chaired by Sir Michael Rake, Chair of BT.
