Three, two, one… LEGO®!

Providing the building blocks for the next generation of engineers

When speaking with engineers from across the globe, there is one, unifying childhood toy that sparked their interest in the field – LEGO®. Knowing this, the Institution of Engineering and Technology launched a global competition that uses LEGO® to help young people discover the wonders of STEM. Providing the foundations that young people need to build up their interest in STEM, the FIRST® LEGO® League enables 9-16 year olds to work as a team and learn valuable life skills.

Last week the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering supported the world-wide search for the next generations engineering talent by hosting a regional heat. The two-day event saw schools from all over the local area compete in challenges that showcased their skills, including applied science, design and technology, programming and control, computing, mathematics, research, communication and presentation skills, strategic thinking, and teamwork.

Each team had constructed a unique, intricate robot capable from the LEGO® sets provided to complete a series of tasks. With great focus, skill and excitement they competed for the honour of representing the Manchester region in the national final.

School outreach is vital across the Faculty of Science and Engineering – and the University as a whole – in inspiring young people and getting them to think about their futures. Activities like the FIRST® LEGO® League not only encourages children to consider STEM subjects as part of their future, but also allows them to get first-hand experience of the University and engage with STEM professionals.

The event was a huge success and a perfect example of university outreach helping future engineers to come together, learn lots and – importantly – have a great time.
