PGR supervisors’ good practice recognised and supervisor toolkit launched
29 Jan 2020
Our University was invited to participate in the pilot UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) supervisory accreditation programme
Four of our PGR supervisors signed up to the programme and subsequently submitted a reflective statement on their supervisory experience and practice. Manchester Doctoral College Strategy Group (MDCSG) is delighted to announce that all four supervisors met UKCGE’s criteria for good supervisory practice and are now ‘UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisors’. Many congratulations to our colleagues:
- Dr Jane Brooks, School of Health Sciences
- Professor Megan Jobson, School of Engineering
- Professor Peter Scott, School of Arts, Languages and Cultures
- Dr Anastasia Valassopoulos, School of Arts, Languages and Cultures
Participating in the pilot enabled the University to have access to current thinking in this important development in PGR activity and the opportunity to help shape the underpinning supervisory framework. MDCSG, in consultation with colleagues from across the University, has used the framework to develop an online Postgraduate Researcher Supervisor Toolkit that covers the wide ranging, demanding and complex set of roles now involved in research supervision.
The toolkit aims to support supervisors in these roles by bringing together information and guidance about all aspects of research supervision from recruitment through to completion. The toolkit signposts to useful services, enables supervisors to navigate policies and regulations, and facilitates interactions with postgraduate researchers. Supervisors are encouraged to provide feedback to ensure the resource continues to be useful and relevant.
Professor Melissa Westwood, Associate Vice President for Research commented: "I am delighted that the good supervisory practice of our supervisors has been recognised. We have used their participation in the UKCGE pilot to support the establishment of our PGR Supervisor Toolkit. I am grateful to these four supervisors and the 50 plus colleagues across all Faculties and professional services who have contributed to the development of the toolkit.
"I am sure this will be a valuable resource for all supervisors and I look forward to receiving their feedback."
